Lubbock's Star Books & Comics is participating in a wonderful Halloween event for all ages- Halloween Comic Fest. Here's a fun video that describes what that is:

You and yours are welcome to come by Star Comics at 2014 34th St, or Star Books & Comics Downtown at 916 16th any time during normal business hours and trick or treat for free comics. (While supplies last.)
You do NOT have to dress up. This is a lot like FCBD [free comic book day], except for Halloween.
There are a lot of Kid friendly comics, so mark it on your calendars, and tell your friends.

Come in on this day, 11am - 6pm, get free Halloween Comicfest comic books, browse some awesome specials, grab bags and more!

I cannot emphasize enough my love for "nerd culture" and there are many scientific studies that show how effective comic books are in making children strong readers. My daughter learned to read well before she went to school thanks to her obsession with my stack of Simpsons graphic novels. Its also a treat that will last a lot longer than candy.
