Talk about a flagrant foul. A Lubbock family had to take down a basketball hoop because it violated a Lubbock city ordinance.

Jason and Kacy Plott told KCBD that they received a written warning that the basketball hoop set up in front of their home in a Lubbock cul-de-sac was in violation of a city ordinance.

The city of Lubbock claimed that they are trying to protect both themselves and residents. According to Lubbock Code Administration Director Stuart Walker, if a vehicle, bicycle or pedestrian runs into the basketball hoop and injures themselves, not only can the City of Lubbock be held responsible, but the owners could be held liable to law suits as well.

Unbelievable!

Welcome to the age of the Sue Happy America. Actually, we've been here for quite a while.

This story really fouls me! Honestly, there aren't a lot of things to do for kids in the Hub City. Sure, we've got a small amusement park and a few water parks for the summer time, and the mall is a great place for teens to go to and get into trouble and mischief. But the indoor skate park is now closed and wasn't very nice to begin with.

So why mess with folks who have decided to invest in an outdoor basketball hoop for themselves and their neighbors to enjoy? If the basketball hoop isn't a complete eye-sore and the surrounding neighbors all enjoy having it on their cul-de-sac, what's the big deal?

We also have some other odd city ordinances that govern things like the placement of signs. For example, a business cannot have any banner or sign displayed at their business without a permit. What? Really?

Planning a garage sale? Forget telling people about it in advance. The only legal way to advertise a garage sale is to have a small sign displayed on your personal property. What good is that?

Summer is right around the corner and City Inspectors are out looking for infractions. So, post and play at your own discretion!.
