Have you ever heard the phrase "ugly as a mud fence"? Well, the drive in from the Lubbock Airport into the city is just that ugly.

We often make fun of Lubbock being flat and without trees, but the city really is in pretty decent shape. The problem is the out and out ugly first impressions that you get when you first get on the Interstate and come in to town.

First impressions are everything. Driving in from the airport, you see a few wide open fields, a bunch of run down businesses, a housing area that has seen much better days, a junkyard and other eyesores.

So the question is, can anything be done about this? Is it all private property? Or can the city provide incentives for these business and other property owners to spiff up the area a bit?

I really have no idea what can be done to this area, but it seems like we should try something. Lubbock is actually a clean town with very few junky areas. It's a shame that people have to see some of the worst of Lubbock the minute they land in the Hub.
