It was two years ago that CBS surprisingly opted against the Greta Gerwig-led How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad, but you know what they say about bad pennies. 20th TV has formally begun development of yet another quasi-spinoff from the franchise, this time going back to the How I Met Your Father title.

Per Deadline, the new iteration comes from This Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, while How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will executive produce in an unknown capacity. How I Met Your Father won’t keep any elements of How I Met Your Dad, but is still “an ensemble show that tells the story from a female point of view.”

Intriguingly, while the the script is still being written as an internal spec for 20th Century Fox TV, the lack of characters from the original series could enable How I Met Your Father to court bidders from other networks than CBS.

How I Met Your Mother’s flat ending no doubt influenced the decision to pass on its first spinoff, but does some distance on the 2014 finale prime How I Met Your Father for a better shot?
