Former Texas Tech QB Davis Webb Leads California to Upset Texas

Davis Webb, former QB at Texas Tech, led the California Golden Bears to an upset win over Texas Saturday night with help from a controversial call.

A "complete defensive meltdown" is being attributed to the team's 50-43 loss. A hotly-contest fumble near the end zone during a big Cal play didn't help.

Cal running back Vic Enwere ran 54 yards on a 3rd and 1 play with less than two minutes left in the game to score a touchdown. But the touchdown, which would have put Cal up 56-43, was reversed due to Enwere dropping the ball before crossing into the end zone. Texas' Dylan Haines picked up the football while Cal players celebrated. But refs said the recovery wasn't quick enough and, believing at first it was a touchdown, blew the whistle before the football was picked up.

"The ruling on the field was a touchdown, which replay determined that there was a fumble at the 1-yard line," said Big 12 referee Mike Defee (quote via ESPN). "The ball rolled into the end zone, came to rest, Cal players ran past it, and many Texas players ran past it."

Webb, who transferred from Texas Tech after the 2015 season, then ran out the clock, securing California's win. He finished with 27-of-40 for 396 passing yards.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong said about the play: "I don't think that hurt us. Number one the ball should have never gotten down there, and we had too many opportunities before that play."

Cal moved up to 2-1 with the victory, and Texas fell to 2-1.
