Defy Death With the New ‘Flatliners’ Remake Trailer

I know that this very web site has declared a personal fatwa against slowed-down pop songs in movie trailers, but I can’t help but feel like the spots advertising the upcoming remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 cult object Flatliners won’t be complete until they’ve tapped a creepy children’s choir to cover the Doors’ “Break On Through (To The Other Side).” It’s perfect! The song is about permeating the boundaries between life and death, the film deals with the same topic (only with what appear to be unsettling CGI zombies in the mix), it’s bananas that some enterprising ad executive hasn’t made the connection.

Not a whole lot of new material to pore over in the international trailer, relative to the spot that dropped last month. We’re reintroduced to the clique of driven, competitive medical students whose drive to outdo one another — first academically, then in general — pushes them into the beyond. Roll call: there’s Ellen PageNeighbors 2 star and The Flash star-to-be Kiersey ClemonsxXx: The Return of Xander Cage star Nina DobrevRogue One star Diego Luna, and British TV stalwart James Norton. Kiefer Sutherland, the star of the original film, will also make an appearance in a supporting role, though we don’t see him in this trailer, either.

The film will get jolted into theaters on September 29, putting this remake up against the Doug Liman-directed Tom Cruise vehicle American Made, which attempts to do for the memory of Edge of Tomorrow what Flatliners does to human consciousness. Late September will be rich with unnatural resuscitations!
