Enterovirus Cases Confirmed in Lubbock County

Officials with the City of Lubbock have confirmed three cases of Enterovirus D68 within Lubbock County.

According to the press release, the onset of illness for each of the children occurred in early September.

EV-D68 is in many ways similar to the common cold at first, but can lead to serious respiratory illness. The virus can spread through fluid, air or surface contact so hygiene is paramount to limit your susceptibility. In general, infants and children are more susceptible to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control keep up to date information on the outbreak and are continuing to collect and disperse information regarding the virus.

There was no word on the condition of the three children in Lubbock County.

The City of Lubbock has offered these tips to reduce the risk of infection:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
• Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
• Stay home when feeling sick and obtain consultation from your health care provider.
