Once upon a time, a man with a dream turned a small animation studio into a global empire. Much of that success was built on a series of wildly popular feature films, many of which shared a common figure: A beautiful, heroic princess. The man was Walt Disney and even after he passed away in 1966, his company continued to dedicate much of its creative energy on films (and television shows and untold tons of merchandise) dedicated to princesses. The latest, a live-action version of the studio’s Oscar-nominated cartoon Beauty and the Beast, opens in theaters on Friday. In its honor, the staff of ScreenCrush (and Mousterpiece Cinema co-host Josh Spiegel) decided to rank every single Disney princess in history.
As you can probably imagine, animated movies are dubbed into other languages for distribution in other countries. But did you know that for the Chinese version of Beauty and the Beast featured Jackie Chan as the voice of the Beast? And not only did Jackie provide the Beast’s dialogue, he even sung his songs? He did a great job too; that’s just one of the timeless Beauty and the Beast facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!
You know him as Neo from The Matrix and as Ted from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. But did you know Keanu Reeves has a strange habit of playing guys named John? He was Johnny Utah in the original Point Break, Johnny Mnemonic in, uh, Johnny Mnemonic, and John Wick in John Wick and the new John Wick: Chapter 2. And there are lots more examples. The dude likes playing Johns. As Keanu himself might say: Whoa. That’s just one of the facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!
Too much time and effort in Cinemaland is wasted turning film into a game of winners and losers; Movie X made Y dollars so it matters more than Movie Z. But a film is way more than its box-office total. Some of the best movies released in 2016 failed to meet their financial expectations.
You probably know that Jennifer Lawrence inherited the role of Mystique in the X-Men movies from Rebecca Romijn. But did you know that the elaborate makeup process required to turn Lawrence into a scaly blue mutant used to take eight hours...
Okay, so it was one of the worst summer movie seasons in recent memory. Trying to find the good blockbusters amongst the last four months releases sometimes felt like trying to find a needle in a stack of s---. But even this year there were diamonds in the rough. Today we’re celebrating the ten best, the summer movies of 2016 that didn’t make us weep for the future of cinema — and note that this list is just movies that got wide releases in at least 500 theaters. We’ll have a separate piece on under-the-radar summer films you might have missed next week on ScreenCrush. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the highlights from a depressing summer before we clear the decks and get ready for the fall.
Today, Leonardo DiCaprio is a household name; the man is one of the biggest and most beloved movie stars in the world. But did you know that when DiCaprio was first starting out as a child actor, an agent tried to convince him to change his name? It’s true; if this agent had his way Leonardo DiCaprio could have been known the world over as “Lenny Williams,” because that sounded “familiar” and had a “friendly ring to it.” That’s just one of the titanic (sorry) Leonardo DiCaprio facts in the latest installment of You Think You Know Movies!
After a winter that felt like it would never end (we’re still not entirely sure it ever did end), summer is finally here! OK, well the summer movie season is here anyway and with it comes sequels, reboots, remakes, prequels, adaptations, spinoffs and, if you look hard enough, some original movies too...
