New Netflix Instant Releases: January 2017
Look, a lot of bad things happened in 2016 (so much so that the entire year has become a meme), but it’s time to look forward to all the promising things 2017 might bring — and your streaming BFF Netflix is already on top of it. There’s plenty of good stuff hitting the service in January, including premieres of Netflix Originals like A Series of Unfortunate Events and the YA film Coin Heist, as well as classics like Boogie Nights and The Shining.
What’s Leaving Netflix Instant: January 2017
Just as Netflix Instant giveth, so must Netflix Instant taketh away, and while there are plenty of great new titles coming to the streaming giant’s service in January, there’s almost just as many that will expire. Now’s a good time to stop procrastinating and finally get around to checking out some of those 30 For 30 specials, or maybe binge-watch every season Murder, She Wrote (you can knock out 12 seasons of Jessica Fletcher in two weeks, right?). January also sees the exit of teen classics like Bring It On and Sixteen Candles, which sounds like a great Saturday night double feature — but you only have a few more weeks to make that happen.
Daisy Ridley Says ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Already Revealed Rey’s Parents
One of the biggest questions we were left with at the end of The Force Awakens, aside from “Do you think Luke makes his own organic soap out there on that space island?” was “Who the heck are Rey’s parents?” It’s a question that won’t be answered in the Star Wars universe until Episode VIII hits theaters late next year…unless you’re a real smarty-pants like Daisy Ridley.
What the Heck Is Up With Alpha-5 in This New ‘Power Rangers’ Image?
With those shiny new Schumacher-esque suits and Rita Repulsa’s swampy Lady Gaga-as-a-Mortal Kombat-character aesthetic, you’d think that little else about the new Power Rangers movie could surprise us. You would think wrong. Today in “What the heck is going on with this Power Rangers reboot?” a new image from the upcoming film has given us our first look at their take on Alpha-5, and it is WACKY.
‘World War Z’ Director to Helm Live-Action ‘Winnie the Pooh’ for Disney
Yet another live-action project is gearing up for production at Disney, as their new Winnie the Pooh movie has taken a sizable step closer to the big screen. In a move that can certainly be described as nothing less than A Choice, the studio has hired World War Z and Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster to helm Christopher Robin’s live-action return to the Hundred Acre Woods.
James Gunn Backs Hidden ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Easter Egg With 100,000 Dollar Pledge
Last fall, James Gunn revealed that there was still one Guardians of the Galaxy easter egg that hadn’t been discovered, sending fans scrambling to scrutinize the film in search of what the director called “the big one.” Over a year later, the easter egg still hasn’t been found, leading some dispirited folks to believe they’ve been sent on a wild goose chase. Now Gunn is putting his money where his mouth is, offering $100,000 to the fan who proves that the easter egg doesn’t exist.
‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’ Has a Spooky ‘Oculus’ Easter Egg
Weirdly enough, this week’s only new nationwide theatrical release is…Inferno. Luckily, Ouija: Origin of Evil hit theaters last week, giving thrill-seeking audiences a perfectly scary alternative to watching Tom Hanks solve some puzzles this Halloween weekend. If you’ve already seen Mike Flanagan’s surprisingly solid Ouija prequel, you may have noticed a particularly creepy easter egg lurking in the fictional family’s basement — and if you haven’t seen the film yet (or if you didn’t notice the first time around), Flanagan has confirmed a spooky connection to his previous horror hit, Oculus, which should inspire you to check out Origin of Evil this weekend.
Donald Glover Is Young Lando Calrissian in Young Han Solo ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff
Things are real tough for everyone right now. Our current election is bonkers, Twitter and Netflix were down for most of the day, and Jennifer Lawrence is probably dating Darren Aronofsky. Life is hard, you know? But sometimes the world is OK and dreams can come true, and if you need proof of that, look no further than this amazing casting news: Donald Glover is playing young Lando Calrissian in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo movie. PRAISE HANDS EMOJI, AMEN.
‘Doctor Strange’ Post-Credits Scenes Revealed!
It should go without saying that this post contains major spoilers for Doctor Strange — specifically the mid- and post-credits scenes from the Sorcerer Supreme’s big debut. In addition to introducing new mystical elements (and threats), Doctor Strange establishes some very interesting connections to the MCU and teases events to come. If you’re curious about what the future might hold and can’t wait until November 4, we have the full details on the mid and post-credits scenes from Marvel’s latest.
‘The Monster’ Trailer: Zoe Kazan Meets Something Worse Than Cujo
It took director Bryan Bertino six years to deliver a follow-up to his directorial debut, 2008’s terrifying instant horror classic The Strangers. Although most people didn’t check out his second film, the surprisingly decent found footage flick Mockingbird (it’s on Netflix, FYI), perhaps more will be drawn to The Monster. The first trailer for Bertino’s latest has arrived online, teasing a simple horror thriller in the vein of Cujo.
‘Split’ Review: M. Night Shyamalan’s Best Film in Years Is a Surprisingly Poignant Thriller
The Visit was a fun, kooky and simple little horror flick that reminded audiences that M. Night Shyamalan still has the capacity to surprise and entertain us — but more than anything, it inspired optimism with the promise of more good things to come. Shyamalan has fully delivered on that promise with Split, an incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking thriller. Although occasionally heavy-handed, Shyamalan’s latest is his most considerate and effective film in years, with a startling emotional core.
Stick Around For These ‘The Blair Witch Project’ Facts
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project quickly became one of the most profitable independent films of all time. It wasn’t technically the first found footage horror film, but it’s still the most famous of the bunch. Everyone knows the Blair Witch name (and the names Heather, Josh and Mike), but did you know that directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick’s wildly successful horror flick didn’t even have a script? That’s just one of the facts featured in the last episode of You Think You Know Movies!
